How are you? Hope you are well! So anything new, any updates? I am doing well and trying to make time for what I enjoying doing (read writing). The other day, one of my friends asked me about mumways and how am I able to write for mumways with a job, household, and two kids. I took it as a compliment, smiled (one of those big ear to ear ones) and told her that I do it for my own peace of my mind. If you are doing it for yourself and it is giving you a bit of perspective, then it’s not hard at all. With time, it becomes a habit. It comes naturally and it gives me a chance to connect, connect with you and myself. I keep my focus on the current piece of writing and forget what I wrote before. It is all in the past. I am not in competition with anyone. I don’t have any deadlines to meet and I don’t have to please anyone. It takes away the ‘fear’ factor and you just remain in the moment and enjoy what you do. Right at this moment, when I am writing this piece, it is giving me a sense of purpose and direction. This is all I want. Most of us are jugglers, we multitask. And if we want to start a habit of doing something, all we need is to convince the ‘mind’.
Mind works in mysterious ways. If you convince it that it’s going to be ok, just an hour of your time and you will end up with a piece of writing (in my case), it will believe it and be instrumental in executing your plans. However, it’s equally true that if you convince it that everything is going to be difficult, there is no point of your existence and today is just another day, it will believe it and trust me you can’t even get out of your bed. It’s like making plans at night for going for a morning walk and by mid night, coming up with excuses of ‘Why it’s actually not a good idea?’. Things such as ‘if you wake up early, you will be sleepy for the entire day’ ‘you need your 8 hours of sleep as studies have evidenced it’ will reason with your mind. Ever happened with you? You can forget about that ‘morning walk’. It’s not going to happen. Or you can stay with the good old ‘from tomorrow strategy’. I have done that as well 🙂
I am just a few posts old and it doesn’t give me any authority to comment on the ‘mind’ or my writing. My writing is usually simple tales of you and (mostly me). So what’s this post about? Is it going anywhere? Trust me, I have something in my mind. The other day, when I was coming back from work, I read a story on the Evening Standard (newspaper) with the headline ‘Year of the Goat’. It was about a lady called Jane Lewis and her fashion label ‘Goat’. It was the first time I heard about her and yet her fashion brand ‘Goat’ has been there for about 14 years now. When she started in 2001, nobody knew her and today she is followed by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Duchess of Cambridge, Samantha Cameroon, Keira Knightley. She has no formal training in fashion and she has said it herself that she can’t even sew a button on. My immediate thought after reading that particular statement was nothing profound. I thought ‘I can at least do that! I can even sew a torn piece of cloth’. Now, I would not go on bragging about my stitching skills because if my parents read it, they will spill the beans. So getting back to her story, she said that for most of her career, she did not even call herself a designer, she used to say that ‘she worked in the fashion industry’. What struck me about the story is the power of the mind – making the mind believe that it’s ok, even if you don’t have any formal qualification, even if you can’t sew a button, you can still make a career in the fashion industry. It did not happen overnight and she is doing it while enjoying being a mum of three.
I would have questioned myself and would have found myself in a vulnerable position. I would have thought that there are so many well established names with great credentials and I don’t even stand a chance. Even after being ready for decades, there are lots of people, who are still holding themselves. I know a lot of people, whom I know are extremely talented, but they are not ready yet. What if they just give it a try and forget about any competition. You are just standing for yourself and it doesn’t matter what others think of your work. Believe me, it takes away the pressure and you are ready to go. Give it a try! You can apply it anywhere, right from waking up for a run to making it a habit. Declare it to your mind and the mind will believe it and work for it. Easy! Isn’t it? Go, give it a try!
