Please welcome our first ‘Me to Be’ mum, Ikuko Ogawa
Flowers are beautiful on their own but when you put them together it involves your thinking. The idea of the project ‘Me to Be’ is that you can take your passion for something to the next level with your thinking and passion and a platform for mums to present their work and ideas. When I saw Ikuko’s work, I felt this is something one can start with and work on to make it big. Let me introduce you to the multifaceted Iku. The word ‘Iku’ itself means to ‘raise’, ‘grow’ and hence the story.
Iku is from Japan and she has two beautiful kids and wonderfully managing time along with setting out her magic with flowers. Iku is a Qualified master of Dutch flower arrangement from Boerma instituut,.Aalsmeer in The Netherlands, worked with world champions of flower cups – Gregor Lerche and Per Benjamin. “After I took master diploma, I started my own class at my house and also helped many flower artist who were already successful. (I went to work for Mr, Gregor Lershe for special Christmas event for 2 month in Germany. I worked as an assistant for the demonstration for Per Benjamin. I worked in a flower shop in Amsterdam”, Iku said.
The important thing is to start it and on the way thinking to make it big. Although Iku has professional qualifications but if you are really interested and passionate about something you can go for it and get yourself trained on the way. If you keep on doing something for a long time, you tend to get better at it and it comes naturally to you. No matter, how much you have practiced your art, it takes a bit of courage and heroism to take the next step. Iku said, ‘the little one has started going to Kindergarten, which made some time for me. In the summer, I encountered a nice cafe and the owner offered me to teach my flower arrangement. Then I took a heroic step!’ She has recently launched her own website, please take a look, www.ikukoogawa-flower.com.
Identifying the opportunities to develop your talent is the next big thing. For Iku, it was the café and from there grown into a wider business. For the mums with little ones, you can take up something small and work on it for a some period of time, and let me tell you people will start calling you an expert! It doesn’t have to be something that you are trained on or have a degree in, just a little something that you enjoy doing. So what’s stopping you, go for it!
As a mum, on managing time, Iku said ‘that her job is not 9-5 and sometimes she has to take phone calls or attend to her emails during family times which is not easy. However, if you are happy doing what you like, you make time to make up for it. Iku does the same, things such as cooking something delicious for the family or spending quality time with the kids. She believes that children can learn something through flowers, to develop their apprehension of colour, design and love for nature.
I thought for the Christmas season, we can have a little flower arrangement of our own and Iku has very kindly presented one for the readers. Hope you enjoy making your own interpretation of her version of floral arrangement.
